The Biterroot, prior to its adoption as the
state flower of Montana, was considered a delicacy
among natives: specifically the Shoshone and Flathead
Indians. The roots of the Bitterroot plant were
even believed to have magical powers; the small
red core found inside the root was said to have
the ability to stop a bear. In 1894 the adoption
of a state flower was put to a statewide ballot
in Montana the Bitterroot won overwhelmingly winning
62% of the total vote.
