Tennessee's State Flower: Iris & Passionflower
Tennessee is unusual — it has no single official state flower. Instead, lawmakers named both a state wildflower and a state cultivated flower.
Two Flowers, Two Roles
The state's official wildflower is the purple passionflower (Passiflora incarnata), a native climbing vine with an intricate, crown-like bloom. Its official cultivated flower is the iris, prized in home gardens across the state for its sword-shaped leaves and elegant three-petaled blooms, most commonly seen in shades of purple and blue.
QUICK FACT
The passionflower's fruit, known as a maypop, is edible and was used by Native Americans long before European settlement.
