Remedy for Sick Ferns

Sick Ferns Hero

Browning fronds, dropped leaflets, and a generally sad-looking fern are almost always tied back to one root cause: humidity that's too low for the plant's needs.

Diagnosing the Problem

Most houseplant ferns are native to humid forest floors, and indoor air — especially with heating or air conditioning running — is often far drier than they prefer. Crispy, browning frond tips are the classic sign of insufficient humidity, while yellowing across whole fronds more often points to overwatering or poor drainage.

Checking that the pot drains freely and isn't sitting in standing water rules out root rot as a cause before assuming humidity is the whole story.

QUICK TIP

A pebble tray filled with water beneath the pot, or grouping several plants together, raises local humidity around a fern far more effectively than misting alone.

Bringing It Back

Trim away fully browned fronds to redirect the plant's energy toward new growth, and move it away from heating vents or drafty windows, which dry the air further. Ferns often recover well once humidity and watering are corrected, sending out fresh new fronds within a few weeks.
