Mini Herb Garden
A tiny apartment balcony or a single sunny windowsill is plenty of room for a genuinely useful mini herb garden — space is rarely the real limiting factor.
Choosing Compact Herbs
Chives, thyme, and compact basil varieties stay small and productive in shallow containers, making them well suited to a windowsill setup. A single herb per small pot, arranged together on a tray, is easier to manage than crowding several herbs into one container.
A south-facing window offering at least four to six hours of light gives most compact herbs enough to grow well indoors.
If natural light is limited, a small grow light positioned close to the plants makes up the difference and keeps indoor herbs from stretching toward the window and becoming leggy.
Keeping It Manageable
Small pots dry out faster than garden soil, so checking moisture every day or two is worth the small extra effort a mini herb garden requires compared to an outdoor bed.
