A Genus 210 Species Strong
Magnolia grandiflora — the Southern magnolia, also called bull bay — is the species most associated with Louisiana, prized for its especially rich fragrance and glossy evergreen leaves. The genus as a whole spans roughly 210 species worldwide, but it's this Southern variety, with its enormous white blooms, that has come to symbolize the Gulf South.
