Introduction to Flower Gardens

Getting familiar with the basic needs of perennials and annuals is what carries a flower garden through the years. A few core habits keep flowers blooming and healthy season after season.

The Non-Negotiables

Water, sunlight, and fertile soil are the baseline requirements — skimp on any one and the garden will show it. Amend sandy soil with compost and peat moss to help it hold moisture; amend clay soil with sand and compost to improve drainage. Plant at the garden's existing grade — too deep or too shallow both cause poor performance — and avoid piling mulch against the stem, which can send water draining away from the roots instead of into them.

Ongoing Care

Mix perennials and annuals in the same bed so the display continues as each type comes in and out of bloom. Deadhead through summer — it won't add many new blooms to perennials, but keeps the bed looking tidy, and for annuals it directly encourages continuous flowering. Cultivating the soil keeps weeds from establishing and helps water and nutrients reach deep roots. Not every insect in the garden is a problem: bees, butterflies, and beetles pollinate the flowers, while other insects and microorganisms break down dead plant material into the compost that feeds the soil.
