How to Grow an Avocado Plant

Prompt: avocado pit suspended in water with toothpicks, sprouting roots and a stem, natural daylight, photographic

Sprouting an avocado pit is one of the most popular kitchen-windowsill projects — simple to start, though patience is required, and outdoors-grown fruit is a rare bonus rather than a guarantee.

Starting the Pit

Clean the pit and insert three or four toothpicks around its middle, then suspend it wide-end down in a glass of water so the bottom third stays submerged. Set it on a warm windowsill and change the water every few days — roots typically appear within two to six weeks, followed by a sprouting stem.

Once the stem reaches about 6 inches, cut it back by half to encourage bushier growth, then transplant the rooted pit into potting soil once the roots are well developed.

QUICK TIP

Avocado plants grown from a pit rarely produce fruit indoors, and even outdoors it can take 5 to 13 years — grow this one mainly for the attractive foliage rather than a harvest.

Ongoing Care

Avocado plants want bright light, consistent moisture without soggy soil, and protection from frost, since they're only hardy in warm climates. Indoors, a spot near a sunny south-facing window suits them best year-round.
