Fencing Is Still the Gold Standard
Deer are excellent jumpers, so an effective fence needs to be at least 8 feet tall, or use a double-fence design that confuses their depth perception at a shorter height. For smaller beds, individual plant cages offer a lower-effort alternative.
Choosing Deer-Resistant Plants
Strongly scented plants like lavender, catmint, and rosemary, along with fuzzy or spiny-leaved plants, are rarely a deer's first choice. No plant is completely deer-proof when food is scarce, but leaning on these varieties reduces how often you'll need to intervene.
