Cosmos

Full Sun Cut Flower Self-Seeding

Cosmos sways gracefully atop tall, feathery stems, its open, daisy-like blooms giving cottage gardens an effortless, breezy charm from early summer through frost.

Native to Mexico, cosmos was named by Spanish priests for its perfectly ordered, harmonious petal arrangement — the word "cosmos" itself meaning order or harmony in Greek. Its fine, ferny foliage adds a light, airy texture that pairs beautifully with bolder-leaved plants.

Symbolism

Cosmos symbolizes harmony, order, and modesty, drawing directly from its Greek-derived name and its perfectly symmetrical, evenly spaced petals.

Growing Cosmos

Cosmos thrives in full sun and average, even poor, well-draining soil — too much fertility actually produces excess foliage at the expense of flowers. Direct-sow after the last frost, and deadhead regularly to keep blooms coming; cosmos also self-seeds readily, often returning on its own the following year.

Herbal Remedy Properties

Some traditional Mexican remedies used cosmos preparations for malaria and other ailments, though the plant is grown almost entirely as a cut flower and garden ornamental today rather than for herbal use.
