Chipmunks

Chipmunks dig shallow burrows and raid bulb beds for an easy meal — a nuisance more than a real threat, but one worth discouraging before it gets established.

Protecting Bulbs

Chipmunks are especially drawn to freshly planted tulip and crocus bulbs. Laying a piece of chicken wire just beneath the soil surface over a new bulb bed lets the shoots grow through in spring while blocking chipmunks from digging down to the bulbs themselves.

Removing the Incentive

Woodpiles, dense ground cover, and stone walls near the garden give chipmunks safe cover to nest and forage from. Trimming back low vegetation and clearing brush piles near planting beds removes the shelter that draws them in to begin with.
